Gingivitis and Periodontal disease

Periodontal Disease is a general term to describe diseases of the gum, tooth roots and bone surrounding the teeth and periodontal ligament tissue that joins the teeth to the bone. It includes gum disease (gingivitis) and loss of gum tissue and bone (periodontitis). Periodontal disease is the MOST COMMON problem affecting pets, especially dogs; at least 95% of all dogs, aged five years of more are affected. Infection associated with periodontal disease not only affects the teeth, gums and bone tissues, but has a serious threat to your pet's long term health by causing damage to heart, kidney and liver.

Pictures (before and after Dental prophylaxis) of moderate to severe gingivitis/periodontitis.

Dental prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) is most commonly recommended therapy for tartar and plaque buildup. Antibiotics and more frequent dental prophylaxis are often suggested to control and resolve periodontal disease.

PREVENTION: Best treatment for periodontal disease!

1. Home Dental Care - Regular brushing of your pet's teeth has been found to be the most effective means of control of the building blocks (tartar and plaque) of periodontal disease.

2. Regular dental checkups and dental cleanings as recommended by your veterinarian.

3. Pet foods are now available that significantly reduce buildup of tartar and plaque.
